GST(Goods and Services Tax) FAQ

What's GST?

Goods and Services Tax, or GST, refers to an indirect tax on the supply and use of goods and services. GST was introduced in India as a single tax system on July 1, 2017. It replaced all other indirect taxes. The GST Act was passed by the Central Government in the Budget Session of 2017. It was approved by Parliament on March 29, 2017. The Central Excise Duty (VAT), Entry Tax, and Octroi were some of the indirect taxes that were eliminated.

GST is a tax that covers all aspects of production, sale, and consumption in the country. To register under the GST policy, both small and large businesses must have a GST Identification number. Any type of sale transaction that is done within a state (Inter-state) is subject to Integrated GST. For intra-state sales, Central GST is levied and State GST is levied.

The government collects different forms of GST:

State GST ( STS): This is collected by the State Government

Central GST ( CGSST) It is collected by the Central Government

Integrated GST ( IGT): This information is collected by the Central Government to facilitate inter-state transactions as well as imports

Union Territory GST ( TGSST): This information is collected by the Union Territory Government

How is GST Calculated

The unified tax system makes it possible for taxpayers now to see the tax levied at various points on different goods and services that fall under the GST regime. The GST rate applicable to different categories is required in order to calculate GST. There are four GST rates: 5%, 12% and 18%.

A simple illustration can help you understand how GST is calculated:

A goods or service is priced at Rs. If a goods or services is sold at Rs. 1,000, and the GST rate is 18% then the net price will be = 1,000+ (11,000X(18/100), = 1,000+180 = R. 1,180.

GST Calculation Formula

The following formula can be used to calculate GST:

To add GST to the base amount,

GST Amount = Original Cost * GST% / 100
Net Price = Original Cost + GST

To remove GST from the base amount,

GST removed
GST Amount = Original cost - (Original cost * (100 / 100 + GST%))
Net Price = Original Cost + GST Amount
